01Living in Merewether

Mornings start early in Merewether: laps at the ocean baths, a surf, then coffee on the walk home.

Mornings start early in Merewether: laps at the ocean baths, a surf, then coffee on the walk home. Merewether Beach is the long surf beach and home of the Surfest contest, and at its southern end sit the Merewether Ocean Baths, opened in 1935 and said to be the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere. They are free and open all year. The Bathers Way starts here and runs about 6 km north to Nobbys Beach, while Glenrock's bush tracks begin just to the south.

Away from the sand, cafes sit on quiet corners and there are two much-loved local pubs, The Prince and The Beach Hotel. Buses run to the beach and through the suburb, and The Junction's shops are a short walk away. Merewether Public School is the local primary, with Catholic primaries nearby. Streets climb from the beach past older cottages and newer coastal homes, with ocean views from the higher blocks.
