Bar Beach

Bar Beach is a walking suburb. Streets of family homes and Art Deco flats, some of them heritage-listed, run down to Memorial Drive and the sea. Bar Beach itself is a surf beach with rock pools, and Dixon Park Beach sits just to the south. Above them, the 450 m Newcastle Memorial Walk runs along the clifftop from Strzelecki Lookout, with big views of the coast, and the Bathers Way runs along the beachfront towards Merewether and town.

Coffee is easy: Swell Kiosk sits right on the beach and Sunnyboy Kiosk is at Dixon Park, with Darby Street's cafés and pubs just up the hill. The city centre is about 1.6 km away, an easy walk or ride, and the Civic light rail stop is near the top of Darby Street. Families look to schools in the surrounding suburbs, including Newcastle Grammar's Park Campus in Cooks Hill. It is a small suburb where most errands, swims and dinners are a walk away.
