01Living in The Junction

The Junction is a small, busy shopping village between Merewether, Cooks Hill and Hamilton South.

The Junction is a small, busy shopping village between Merewether, Cooks Hill and Hamilton South. It takes its name from an old coal railway junction, and today it is one of Newcastle's favourite places to eat out, with cafés along Glebe Road, The Grumpy Baker's sourdough on the corner of Watkins Street, and dinner spots on Kenrick and Union Streets, including long-loved Emilio's.

The beach is close. Dixon Park and Bar Beach are an easy walk or ride away, and the Bathers Way runs along the coast. The Junction Hotel, on the corner of Corlette and Kenrick Streets, is the local pub. Buses run along the main roads, and the city centre is about 2.8 km away. The Junction Public School opened in 1872, and St Joseph's, a Catholic primary on Farquhar Street, was founded in 1885. Homes sit on quiet residential streets just off the village, so dinner out is rarely more than a short stroll.
