01Living in The Hill

The Hill rises straight up behind the city centre.

The Hill rises straight up behind the city centre. It was one of Newcastle's first settled areas, laid out in the town's first plan in 1823, and its steep streets are lined with Victorian terraces. At the top, King Edward Park rolls down towards the ocean, with the 1850 Obelisk standing above and the Bogey Hole, a convict-hewn ocean pool, at the foot of the cliffs. Christ Church Cathedral watches over the city from the ridge.

For coffee, Eddie's opened in July 2026 in the restored Shepherds Hill Cottage on The Terrace, with views over the park. Bolton and King Streets are a short walk down, and Darby Street is a few minutes west. Most locals walk, and the hills keep everyone fit. The light rail runs along the flat below. Newcastle Grammar School's Hill Campus is right here. Homes range from Victorian terraces to newer apartments, many with views over the city, harbour or ocean.
