01Living in Cooks Hill

Cooks Hill is inner Newcastle at its most lived-in: tree-lined streets, Victorian terraces, timber cottages, corner pubs and Darby Street, the city's original eat street.

Cooks Hill is inner Newcastle at its most lived-in: tree-lined streets, Victorian terraces, timber cottages, corner pubs and Darby Street, the city's original eat street. Mornings mean coffee on Darby Street or in the back streets at Corner House and Pappa Sven, the Nordic design store and coffee spot on Union Street. Evenings mean a quiet pint at one of the corner pubs, such as the Cricketers Arms, the Oriental or the Commonwealth.

At the top of Darby Street, Newcastle Art Gallery on Laman Street reopened in February 2026 after a major expansion, and Civic Park sits beside it. Cooks Hill is one of the easiest suburbs to live in without a car: the city, harbour and beach are all walkable, and the Civic light rail stop is close by. Newcastle Grammar School's Park Campus is in the suburb. Harris Farm on Darby Street and ALDI on Union Street cover the groceries, and Lowlands Bowling Club offers barefoot bowls beside Centennial Park.
